Semi-autonomous UN agency working for sustainable human development to ensure the survival, protection and development of children. Cooperates with governments in the developing world to develop and implement low cost community-based programs in social service, health, nutrition, education, water and sanitation, environment, and women in development. Works for universal ratification and implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and achievement of the objectives and goals of the 1990 World Summit for Children. Provides universal immunization against six childhood diseases - diphtheria, measles, poliomyelitis, whooping cough, tetanus, and tuberculosis. Promotes the use of oral rehydration therapy to treat diarreheal dehydration, which is the leading cause o death in children in developing countries. In cooperation with the World Healh Organization has launched a “baby friendly hospital initiative” to advance breastfeeding. Provides training for health workers and traditional birth attendants. Furnishes technical supplies and equipment for health centers. Advocates with and helps governments in strengthening basic education for all. Seeks to help children in especially difficult circumstances, including children in armed conflict. Provides relief and rehabilitation assistance in response to the needs of children and women affected by emergencies. Works with 34 national committees, mostly in industrialized countries, providing fund-raising and advocacy support.
