1995 World No-Tobacco Day
Each year, World No-Tobacco Day is celebrated in 190 member states
of the World Health Organization. The main ceremony has always
been held in Geneva, Switzerland, where the headquarters are located.
For the first time ever, World No Tobacco Day is not held in Geneva,
and results following a kind invitation of Dr. Tze, chair of this
Congress.
Thank you Dr. Nakajima. Ladies and Gentlemen, the Honourable Diane
Marleau, Minister of Health Canada and the Honourable Dr. Donna
Shalala, Secretary of Health and Human Services of the United
States of America, will now deliver a joint statement on the Anti-Tobacco
Initiative.

Mr. Stanley Inderson is a lawyer and has served three terms as Minister of Public Health and Environmental Hygiene in Netherlands
Antilles. He has presented and successfully promoted the policies on smoking or health. Both through his appointment as Minister
and through intensive awareness campaign in his country. He is also credited with the passing of the decree recognizing the 31st
of May as the official Tobacco Free Day. This has led to intense campaigns. Patrick? mobilization of the ?? union and the local
governments in favour of introducing anti-tobacco legislation.
For this and other reasons, the Honourable Stanley Inderson has been selected to receive the "Tobacco or Health" award
to be presented by Director-General, Dr. Hiroshi Nakajima.

Ladies and Gentlemen, for twenty-six years, Sir David Hay, has made a significant contribution both in New Zealand and internationally.
He is a founding member of the National Heart Foundation of New Zealand, set up in 1968. He has played a key role ever since.
He has been a member of WHO's expert advisory panel on "Tobacco
or Health" since 1977. He has held inumerous national and international appointments, particularly in cardiology. Sir David
has an established reputation for advancing scientific reasons for not smoking. A position he has been able to advocate strongly
in his distinguished medical career. The Director-General, Dr. Hiroshi Nakajima will now have the pleasure to present Sir David
Hay with the "Tobacco or Health" commemorative award.
